Social Protection and Social Security International
Conference
(FAO) |
| |
On
17-18 January 2008 ICstat “International Cooperation
Center for Statistics” supported FAO “Food
and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations”
in the organization of the International Conference
“Linking Social Protection and Support to Small
Farmer Development in the Context of Food Security”,
held in Rome, at FAO headquarters.
The first objective of the Conference was to facilitate
debate among bilateral donors, multilateral agencies,
policy-makers, farmers’ organizations and NGOs
on synergies and conflict in the design and implementation
of social protection and smallholder policies in Africa.
The second objective has been to provide inputs to FAO
in terms of the types of policies that can be promoted
through national food security strategies and programmes.
The case study countries selected to encourage the debate
were Ethiopia, Malawi and Ghana whose experience in
the field of food security programmes can give an idea
of the linkages between social protection and smallholder
policies and of the impact of these programmes on the
economic and social field.
The Conference was attended by participants coming from
all over the world and from different institutes engaged
in the international cooperation and in the social and
economic research for development (such as World Bank,
UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children, Institute of Development
Studies-University of Sussex, School of Oriental and
African Studies-University of London).
