Abstract

With the technical support of ISTAT, a training programme has been developed for the improvement of social statistics in Romania directed to the central and local staff of the Romanian National Commission for Statistics and other Romanian governmental offices.
This manual was produced by assembling and revising training material and reference documents used in the various courses that were held in Rome and Bucharest. The manual has a twofold objective. On one hand, it can be used for training on the analysis and presentation of social statistics and indicators and for the preparation of dissemination products on social statistics. On the other hand, it provides participants of a training course with the basic tools necessary to prepare, organise and conduct in their turn a training workshop on social statistics analysis, presentation and dissemination.
Special attention is given to the preparation of statistical products well suited to the needs of policy makers and planners, who more than other users need statistics that address problems clearly and directly and are presented in a user-friendly way. The manual also contains modules discussing the data production process as well as the data quality control.
In order to suit the needs of different types of users, the manual is structured in modules. The modules can be used all together and in the sequence proposed, or be selected and delivered with a different sequence, depending on the specific needs of the audience.
