Absract
An
ICStat expert worked as Consultant at the FAO AGLW (Land
and Water Development Division) on behalf of UN-Water, the
inter-agency mechanism that promotes coherence and coordination
of 24 UN Agencies (list at http://www.unwater.org/members.html)
actions aimed at the implementation of the agenda defined
by the Millennium Declaration and the 2002 World Summit
on Sustainable Development as it relates to freshwater and
sanitation.
The expert performed a review of water-related monitoring
activities within the UN-System and its partners, reviewed
concepts and definitions related to water monitoring (including
databases and indicators), launched a series of criteria
and attributes to frame analyze and classify the different
monitoring activities, proposed an innovative federative
UN-Water information system. Research results, with newly
developed polices and recommendations, included in the report
“Water Monitoring, Mapping existing global systems
and initiatives” were adopted by FAO and presented
at the UN-Water meeting on monitoring (at SIWI, Stockholm,
August 2006) where they have been endorsed by UN-Water Task
Force on Monitoring.
